HANOI, -- Vietnam and Russia have pledged to boost defence trade as the two countries look to strengthen what the Ministry of Defence (MoD) in Hanoi has called their "defence industrial partnership".

During Russian prime minister Dmitri Medvedev's visit to Hanoi, which concluded on 7 April, the two sides expressed a willingness to deepen defence trade and "strengthen defence industry and technology transfer" relationships, said the MoD.

The MoD did not identify specific defence programmes but referred to expanding the partnership that has evolved in recent years through which Russia has supplied both technologies and training to military-run Vietnamese industries to enable localised production of Russian platforms.
